By Dr. Mercola
Heartburn drugs known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are among the most commonly used drugs in the world. About 15 million Americans use PPIs, either in prescription or over-the-counter form. Brand names include Prilosec, Prevacid and Nexium.
The drugs have long been touted as a safe way to relieve heartburn, indigestion and acid reflux. They work by inhibiting the production of acid in your stomach, which helps to relieve symptoms but appears to have a number of unintended consequences as well, including for your kidneys.
PPIs have previously been linked to a kidney disorder called acute interstitial nephritis. Now researchers have linked them to the risk of chronic kidney disease, prompting experts to call for more caution in their use.

Heartburn Drugs May Increase Your Risk of Kidney Disease

Researchers from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Health analyzed two sets of data representing more than 250,000 people.1
In the first set, the 10-year absolute risk of developing chronic kidney disease was 11.8 percent among those taking PPIs compared to 8.5 percent among those not taking the drugs.
The second analysis found the 10-year absolute risk of chronic kidney disease among those taking PPIs was 15.6 percent compared to 13.9 percent among non-users.2
The study left some unanswered questions, like how long those who developed kidney disease had been taking PPIs. It’s also not known how the drugs may be harming the kidneys.
Many of those taking PPIs had other risk factors for kidney disease as well, including being more likely to use blood pressure medication (high blood pressure is linked to an increased risk of kidney disease).
However, even though the analysis couldn’t prove that PPIs were directly responsible for the increased risk of kidney disease, the finding warrants caution in the drugs’ use, especially given their prevalence.
Adam Schoenfeld, an internal medicine resident at the University of California, San Francisco, said in an accompanying editorial, “mounting evidence demonstrates that PPIs are associated with a number of adverse effects and are overprescribed.”3 He continued in NPR:
“I think it's a pretty big concern … When they first came out they weren't associated with side effects, or we didn't think they were … So we put [people] on this medication thinking: 'It's a quick fix and they're very safe.' But in actuality they're associated with a range of side effects."

PPIs Are Also Linked to Heart Risks

If you take PPIs, you should know that not only might your kidneys be at risk, but your heart may suffer as well.
After reviewing the medical records of nearly 3 million people, researchers from Stanford University in California found people with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) who took PPIs had a 16 percent risk of heart attack.4
A two-fold increased risk of cardiovascular mortality was also noted in PPI users.5 Such risks make sense when you consider that PPIs are known to reduce nitric oxide (NO) in your blood vessel walls.
NO has the effect of relaxing your blood vessels, so by reducing the amount of NO in your blood vessel walls, PPIs may raise your risk of a heart attack.

PPIs May Raise Your Risk of Fractures

In 2010, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) mandated a new fracture risk warning be added to the labels of both prescription and OTC PPIs.
The safety announcement was based on a review of several epidemiological studies, which found the drugs were associated with an increased risk of factures of the hip, wrist and spine.6
The greatest risk of increased facture risk was found in people who had taken high doses of the drugs (available only in prescription form) or had taken the prescription drugs for at least one year.
Because of this, in 2011 the FDA recalled the safety warning for OTC PPIs, stating that “an osteoporosis and fracture warning on the over-the-counter (OTC) proton pump inhibitor (PPI) medication “Drug Facts” label is not indicated at this time.”7
Their reasoning was that OTC PPIs “are marketed at low doses and are only intended for a 14-day course of treatment up to three times per year.” Since OTC heartburn drugs are only supposed to be used for short courses of treatment, they believed the fracture risk was low.
In reality, however, many people use OTC heartburn meds for much longer than two weeks at a time, and therefore might be exposed to them long-term. Some people may also take higher doses than are recommended. Even the FDA acknowledged this, stating:
“… [C]onsumers, either on their own, or based on a healthcare professional’s recommendation, may take these products for periods of time that exceed the directions on the OTC label.”
Unfortunately, instead of letting consumers know about the fracture risk (so they could make an informed decision about using the drugs), the FDA left it up to health care professionals to be aware of the fracture risk in patients taking OTC PPIs at high doses or for extended periods.
If there’s no communication between the two parties, the consumer will be left at risk.

PPIs May Rob Your Body of Important Nutrients, Increase Your Risk of Serious Infections

If you suffer from acid reflux, suppressing your stomach acid may seem like a very good idea. Be aware, however, that doing so comes with significant risks. Stomach acid is important for your body to absorb vitamin B12, for instance.
The acid separates the B12 from the protein it’s attached to, which is essential for it to be absorbed by your body. People taking PPIs for more than two years had a 65 percent increased risk of vitamin B12 deficiency.8 This, in turn, can lead to a number of troublesome ailments, including:
  • Anemia
  • Nerve damage
  • Psychiatric problems
  • Dementia
Your magnesium levels are also at risk. In 2011, the FDA warned that PPIs may cause low magnesium levels if taken for longer than one year. Even taking a magnesium supplement was not enough to sufficiently increase levels among about one-quarter of those taking PPIs.9
Early signs of magnesium deficiency include loss of appetite, headache, nausea, fatigue, and weakness. Ongoing magnesium deficiency can lead to muscle cramps, seizures, abnormal heart rhythms, personality changes and more.
Further, PPIs may increase your risk of Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea, a potentially life-threatening infection, by 65 percent.10 The risk of hospital-acquired pneumonia may also increase with PPI use, an important consideration since PPIs are commonly given to hospital patients.
One study using a microsimulation model found that this practice needs serious review, as new initiation of PPI therapy led to an increase in hospital mortality in about 90 percent of patients.11
Reducing stomach acid also diminishes your primary defense mechanism against food-borne pathogens, thereby potentially increasing your risk of food poisoning.

Heartburn Drugs Only Treat the Symptoms, Not the Cause

In most cases, acid reflux is not due to having too much acid in your stomach; rather, it's a condition related more commonly to hiatal hernia — a condition in which the acid comes out of your stomach, which is where it's designed to be confined to. After food passes through your esophagus into your stomach, a muscular valve called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) closes, preventing food or acid from moving back up.
Gastroesophageal reflux occurs when the LES relaxes inappropriately, allowing acid from your stomach to flow (reflux) backward into your esophagus.
In the early ‘80s, Dr. Barry Marshall, an Australian physician, discovered that an organism called helicobacter pylori(initially called campylobacter) causes a chronic low-level inflammation of your stomach lining, which is largely responsible for producing many of the symptoms of acid reflux.
One of the explanations for why suppressing stomach acid is so ineffective — and there are over 16,000 articles in the medical literature attesting to this — is that when you decrease the amount of acid in your stomach, you suppress your body's ability to kill the helicobacter bacteria.
So suppressing stomach acid production tends to just worsen and perpetuate the condition. If you're taking a PPI drug to treat your heartburn, understand that you're treating a symptom only; you are in no way addressing the underlying cause. And, by doing so, you're exposing yourself to other potentially more dangerous health problems, courtesy of the drug itself.
That being said, please don’t try to quit PPIs cold turkey, as this can lead to a relapse and severe pain. To minimize this risk, you can gradually decrease the dose you're taking, and once you get down to the lowest dose of the PPI, you can start substituting with an OTC H2 blocker like Tagamet, Cimetidine, Zantac, or Ranitidine.
Then gradually wean off the H2 blocker over the next several weeks. While weaning yourself off these drugs, start implementing the lifestyle modifications discussed below to help eliminate your heartburn once and for all.

Heartburn May Be Due to Too Little Stomach Acid

If you struggle from heartburn, it may be because you have too little stomach acid. One simple strategy to address this deficiency is to swap out processed table salt for an unprocessed version like Himalayan salt. By consuming enough of the raw material, you will encourage your body to make sufficient amounts of hydrochloric acid (stomach acid) naturally.
Sauerkraut or cabbage juice is among the strongest stimulants for your body to produce stomach acid as well. Another benefit is that it can provide you with valuable bacteria to help balance and nourish your gut. Having a few teaspoons of cabbage juice before eating, or better yet, fermented cabbage juice from sauerkraut, will do wonders to improve your digestion. Fresh raw cabbage juice can also be very useful to heal resistant ulcers.12
Another option is to take a betaine hydrochloric supplement, which is available in health food stores without prescription. You'll want to take as many as you need to get the slightest burning sensation and then decrease by one capsule. This will help your body to better digest your food and will also help kill the helicobacter and normalize your symptoms.
Now, while hiatal hernia and H.pylori infection are unrelated, many who have a hiatal hernia also have H. pylori and associated symptoms.13 If you have a hiatal hernia, physical therapy on the area may work as well, and many chiropractors are skilled in this adjustment.

Natural Treatment for Heartburn

Ultimately, the answer to heartburn and acid indigestion is to restore your natural gastric balance and function and to do that, you need to address your gut health. The most important step is to eliminate processed foods and sugars as they are a surefire way to exacerbate acid reflux.
They also alter your gut microbiome and promote the growth of pathogenic microbes. So be sure to eat lots of fresh vegetables and other unprocessed organic foods. Food allergies can also be a contributing factor to acid reflux, so eliminate items such as caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine.
Reseeding your gut with beneficial bacteria, either from traditionally fermented foods or a high-quality probiotic supplement is also important, as this will not only help balance your bowel flora, it can also help eliminate helicobacter bacteria naturally. Probiotics and fermented foods, especially fermented vegetables, also aid in proper digestion and assimilation of your food. Other helpful strategies to get your heartburn under control include the following suggestions.14,15,16
Raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegarYou can help improve the acid content of your stomach by taking one tablespoon of raw unfiltered apple cider vinegar in a large glass of water.
Baking sodaOne-half to one full teaspoon of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) in an eight-ounce glass of water may ease the burn of acid reflux as it helps neutralize stomach acid. I would not recommend this as a regular solution but it can sure help in an emergency when you are in excruciating pain.
Aloe juiceThe juice of the aloe plant naturally helps reduce inflammation, which may ease symptoms of acid reflux. Drink about 1/2 cup of aloe vera juice before meals. If you want to avoid its laxative effect, look for a brand that has removed the laxative component.
Ginger rootGinger has been found to have a gastroprotective effect by blocking acid and suppressing helicobacter pylori. According to a 2007 study, it's also far superior to lansoprazole for preventing the formation of ulcers, exhibiting six- to eight-fold greater potency over the drug.17

This is perhaps not all that surprising, considering the fact that ginger root has been traditionally used against gastric disturbances since ancient times. Add two or three slices of fresh ginger root to two cups of hot water. Let steep for about half an hour. Drink about 20 minutes or so before your meal.
Vitamin DVitamin D is important for addressing any infectious component. Once your vitamin D levels are optimized, you're also going to optimize your production of about 200 antimicrobial peptides that will help your body eradicate any infection that shouldn't be there.

As I've discussed in many previous articles, you can increase your vitamin D levels through sensible sun exposure, or through the use of a tanning bed. If neither of those are available, you can take an oral vitamin D3 supplement; just remember to also increase your vitamin K2 intake.
Astaxanthin This exceptionally potent antioxidant was found to reduce symptoms of acid reflux in patients when compared to a placebo, particularly in those with pronounced helicobacter pylori infection.18 Best results were obtained at a daily dose of 40 mg.
Slippery elmSlippery elm coats and soothes your mouth, throat, stomach, and intestines, and contains antioxidants that may help address inflammatory bowel conditions. It also stimulates nerve endings in your gastrointestinal tract. This helps increase mucus secretion, which protects your gastrointestinal tract against ulcers and excess acidity.

The University of Maryland Medical Center makes the following adult dosing recommendations:19
  • Tea: Pour 2 cups boiling water over 4 g (roughly 2 tablespoons) of powdered bark, then steep for 3 to 5 minutes. Drink 3 times per day.
  • Tincture: 5 mL, 3 times per day.
  • Capsules: 400 to 500 mg 3 to 4 times daily for 4 to 8 weeks. Take with a full glass of water.
  • Lozenges: follow dosing instructions on label.
Glutamine Research published in 2009 found that gastrointestinal damage caused by H. pylori can be addressed with the amino acid glutamine, found in many foods, including beef, chicken, fish, eggs, dairy products, and some fruits and vegetables.20 L-glutamine, the biologically active isomer of glutamine, is also widely available as a supplement.
Folate or folic acid (vitamin B9) and other B vitaminsAs reported by clinical nutritionist Byron Richards, research suggests B vitamins can reduce your risk for acid reflux.21 Higher folic acid intake was found to reduce acid reflux by approximately 40 percent.

Low vitamin B2 and B6 levels were also linked to an increased risk for acid reflux. The best way to raise your folate levels is by eating folate-rich whole foods, such a sliver, asparagus, spinach, okra, and beans.
Melatonin, l-tryptophan, vitamin B6, folic acid, vitamin B12, methionine, and betaine A dietary supplement containing melatonin, l-tryptophan, vitamin B6, folic acid, vitamin B12, methionine, and betaine, was found to be superior to the drug omeprazole in the treatment of GERD.22

Part of the success is thought to be due to melatonin's inhibitory activity on nitric oxide biosynthesis, which plays an important role in transient LES relaxation, which, as I mentioned earlier, is part of the real underlying problem of GERD.

Impressively, 100 percent of patients receiving this supplement reported a complete regression of symptoms after 40 days of treatment, compared to just under 66 percent of those taking omeprazole. The authors concluded that "this formulation promotes regression of GERD symptoms with no significant side effects."

Foods with Flavonoids May Help With Erectile Dysfunction

Many men have trouble discussing problems they may have with erectile dysfunction. But, while you may find it embarrassing, it can also be a signal of other underlying health related conditions, such as heart disease.
The physical function of an erection occurs between a complex interaction of nerves, muscle, emotions, hormones, brain and blood supply. When the arteries undergo changes related to atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries, it is more difficult for the blood to pass through.
The process plays out first in the smaller arteries of the penis, before it reaches the larger arteries supplying the heart, kidneys and brain.
Researchers from Harvard University released the results of a two-decade-long study that suggested men who habitually ate foods rich in flavonoids three times a week had a reduced incidence of erectile dysfunction as they aged.1
At the start of the study none of the men suffered from erectile dysfunction (ED), but by the end of the 20 years 35.6 percent reported problems with ED.
The researchers controlled for the differences in physical activity, alcohol intake, diabetes and other physical factors that are known to affect the development and progression of ED in the over 25,000 men who participated in the study.
They found that in men younger than 70, there was an 11 to 16 percent lower risk if the men ate several types of food rich in flavonoids per week.2

How Flavonoids Work

Flavonoids are synthesized by plants. They are antioxidants that have a significant effect on the scavenging of free radicals in the body, reducing the negative effect on DNA and disease risk.
Although they are an antioxidant, it appears that many of their benefits results from their ability to modulate cell-signaling pathways.
These flavonoids may have an effect on chronic disease by selectively inhibiting kinases, regulators of cell function and cell cycles, and reducing the inflammatory and adhesion response of the cells.3,4 All these functions help to reduce the potential risk of atherosclerosis in the arteries.
Strong research evidence suggests that consumption of flavonoids will help reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, some cancers, vascular disease and neurodegenerative diseases.5 The early signs of these conditions may result in ED.

Foods With Flavonoids

Not all fruits and vegetables are created equally. Those that have higher amounts of flavonoids, and thus reduce your risk factors associated with erectile dysfunction, include:6
Apples, galaCranberriesBananas
NectarinesPeachesBlueberries
CherriesStrawberriesBlackberries
GrapefruitsPlumsRaspberries
Tea

Factors Affecting Erectile Dysfunction

There are several factors that affect ED. Interestingly, many of them are affected by your exercise habits, diet and stress.7
Physical Factors
Vascular ConditionsAlcohol
MedicationsDiabetes
Abnormal Nerve FunctionHormone deficiency
Surgical ProceduresRecreational Drugs
DietHigh Blood Pressure
Heart DiseaseFatigue
Psychological factors can also affect erectile function. These include:8,9,10
Performance AnxietyDepression
StressRelationship Problems
GuiltLow Self-Esteem

Viagra Is Not the Answer

If you experience ED, it's important you have your specific situation evaluated. It may be an early sign you are experiencing arterial changes that may affect your heart and potential risk for stroke or heart attack.
If psychological factors are impeding your physical relationship, it can become a vicious cycle. ED may be triggered by stress or depression, which triggers relationships problems that leads to further stress or relationship problems.
Like other health conditions, it's important to get to the bottom of the problem and not throw pills at the issue. You may need medications to control your health conditions, but you will also need diet changes and stress reduction to fully address your challenges.
One of the medications to treat ED that gained national notoriety was Viagra. Billed as the miracle pill that would allow men to once again feel younger and stronger, sales of the little blue pill have reached 35 million men worldwide, according to manufacturer Pfizer.11
But, once the excitement wore off, sales began dropping. Revenue dropped from a little over $2 million in 2012 to $1.6 million in 2014.12
This may have been the result of the average cost of $22 per pill, risk of significant side effects or the recognition that although men were having sex, it didn't fix their relationship problems.
Now men who use Viagra face more health risks. According to research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), taking Viagra is associated with an increased risk of developing melanoma.13
Men who take Viagra have an 84 percent greater risk of developing the deadliest form of skin cancer (melanoma) over those men who have never taken the ED medication.
Don't be tempted by the prices of Viagra and other ED medications sold online. According to Forbes Magazine and the World Meeting on Sexual Medicine, 77 percent of the Viagra sold online from 22 different sites was fake, and potentially dangerous.14
Fake Viagra is potentially high in heavy metals, holds an increased risk of fungal and bacterial infections when the medication is manufactured in unsanitary conditions and confiscated Viagra has contained printer ink, drywall dust, amphetamines and the antibiotic metronidazole (Flagyl).15

More Benefits of Flavonoids

The benefits of eating a healthy diet, full of flavonoid rich fruits, vegetables and tea, go beyond helping your vascular system, heart, and erectile functioning. Unlike pharmaceutical approaches to your health that seek to address one issue, a holistic approach will address your whole body.
Drinking tea, naturally high in flavonoids, has been linked with higher bone density and a lower risk of osteoporotic fractures.16,17 Drinking three or more cups of flavonoid- rich tea appeared to have the most benefits for bone density.
Flavonoids also block the messages that promote inflammation through blocking cyclo-oxygenase and lipoxygenase enzymes in the body.18 The suppression of inflammatory signals reduces the potential risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke and heart attack.
Increasing the consumption of foods rich in flavonoids can improve cognitive function. A growing number of flavonoids have been shown to reduce Alzheimer-type pathology in the brain and increase cognitive function through increased blood flow and neurogenesis in the hippocampus, the area of the brain significantly affected by dementia.19,20 Other studies have found that flavonoids protect against other types of cognitive declines seen with aging.21

Natural Viagra Alternatives

Increasing your consumption of flavonoids in your diet is a long-term plan to improve your blood supply and reduce the risk of erectile dysfunction. There are some natural alternatives to Viagra that don't come with the side effects of the pharmaceutical drug.
Nitric oxide is a molecule your body produces that signals smooth muscle cells to relax, increasing blood flow and reducing the production of plaque in the arteries. L-arginine can improve microcirculation in your genitals that can result in stronger erections and better sexual responsiveness, but without the side effects of Viagra and other ED drugs.
Research studies demonstrate that L-arginine is more effective when combined with pycnogenol, resulting in significant improvement of sexual functioning22 Another pilot study found using an on-demand oral administration of 6 grams of L-arginine combined with 6 mg of yohimbine, improved the sexual functioning of men diagnosed with mild to moderate ED.23

Your Healthy Sex Life Is Linked to Healthy Lifestyle Choices

Your bodily functions, including your sexual health, is all interrelated and interconnected. You can't separate sexual health from your overall health. The choices you make about your lifestyle affect your sexual health, and your physical intimacy benefits your physical and emotional health.
If your sex life inside your committed relationship is not fulfilling, and stress or the relationship is not the problem, it may be time to evaluate the remainder of your lifestyle choices. Use these strategies to naturally boost your libido:
  1. Eliminate Sugar
  2. Sugars are found in sweets, processed foods, sodas, alcohol, and any foods containing high numbers of carbohydrates. All carbohydrates will metabolize to sugar in your body and sugar may turn off the hormones that control your sexual desire.
  3. Normalize Insulin Levels
  4. My nutrition plan is designed to help normalize your insulin levels and reduce the effects of sugar on your cells and body. Making the right dietary choices will increase your energy levels, reduce your risk for disease and improve your sex life.
  5. Optimize Vitamin D Levels
  6. Vitamin D sulfate, a product of your body's manufacture of vitamin D from sunlight, may be critical in prevention of the formation of arterial plaque. Arterial plaque will reduce blood flow to your genitals and increase your risk of ED. Your best method of getting vitamin D is through exposure to sunlight.
  7. Exercise
  8. Regular exercise improves your mood, your muscle control, balance, coordination and body image. Using high intensity interval training (HIIT) will also naturally increase your growth hormone and testosterone. These hormones are essential to your sex drive and responsiveness, whether male or female.
  9. Eliminate Smoking and Avoid Alcohol
  10. Smoking temporarily increases your blood pressure and deposits multiple different toxins in your body. Both factors are related to the health of your arteries and therefore your sexual functioning. Alcohol is high in carbohydrates that metabolize to sugar and reduce your sexual drive and responsiveness.
  11. Quality Sleep
  12. High-quality, restorative sleep is necessary to the function of your brain, cognitive abilities, creativeness and sexual drive and responsiveness.

Why Medicine Won't Allow Cancer to be Cured

Imagine a commercial plane crashed and there were some fatalities involved. You can be sure that would make the headline of every major newspaper. Well, we have the equivalent of 8-10 planes crashing EVERY DAY with everyone on board dying from cancer.
Nearly two million Americans are diagnosed with cancer every year—one person out of three will be hit with a cancer diagnosis at some time in their lives, in spite of the massive technological advances over the past half-century.
Western medicine is no closer to finding a "cancer cure," while cancer has grown into a worldwide epidemic of staggering proportions. The statistics speak for themselves:
  • In the early 1900s, one in 20 people developed cancer
  • In the 1940s, one in 16 people developed cancer
  • In the 1970s, it was one in 10
  • Today, it's one in three!
According to the CDC, about 1,660,290 (1.66 million) new cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed in 20131. If overall death rates are falling, why are incidence rates still on the rise? The answer is simple: the 40-year "war on cancer" has been a farce.
The cancer epidemic is a dream for Big Pharma, and their campaigns to silence cancer cures have been fierce, which is a tale well told in the documentary film featured above, Cancer: Forbidden Cures.

The Cancer Machine

Please understand that cancer is big business. The cancer industry is spending virtually nothing of its multi-billion dollar resources on effective prevention strategies, such as dietary guidelines, exercise and obesity education. Instead, it pours its money into treating cancer, not preventing or curing it.
Why would they shoot their cash cow? If they can keep the well-oiled Cancer Machine running, they will continue to make massive profits on chemotherapy drugs, radiotherapy, diagnostic procedures and surgeries.
The typical cancer patient spends $50,000 fighting the disease. Chemotherapy drugs are among the most expensive of all treatments, many ranging from $3,000 to $7,000 for a one-month supply.
If the cancer industry allows a cure, then their patient base goes away. It makes more sense to keep a steady stream of cancer patients alive, but sick and coming back for more. How did this societal monster come about?
The featured documentary is enormously informative. It details how the pharmaceutical industry partnered with the American Medical Association (AMA) in an ingenious plan to overtake the medical system in four swift, easy steps, back in the early 1900s. In a nutshell, it went something like this:
  1. International bankers that own the drug and chemical companies gained control over the medical education system over 100 years ago.
  2. They gave grants to the AMA and leading medical schools in exchange for seats on their board and the ability to control policy.
  3. Finally, they cleverly engineered their control of virtually every federal regulatory agency relating to the practice of medicine.

'Don't You DARE Cure Anyone!'

In spite of the enormous amounts of money funneled into cancer research today, two out of three cancer patients will be dead within five years after receiving all or part of the standard cancer treatment trinity—surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. This is not too surprising when you consider that two of the three are carcinogenic themselves! One study estimated that chemotherapy benefits about one of every 20 people receiving it.
Over the last hundred years, a number of natural cancer treatments have been developed and used successfully to treat patients in the US and other countries. All have been vehemently discounted, silenced, and pushed under the rug by the medical monopoly, with physicians and researchers attacked, smeared, sent to prison, and professionally ruined for daring to defy the medical establishment.
To this day, with respect to credibility in medicine, "quack" is synonymous with "competition."
In order to protect the medical monopoly, any viable natural treatment is met with massive opposition by the pharmaceutical and medical industries. Drug companies have no interest in natural agents that they cannot patent, because they interfere with their revenue stream. They will go—and have gone—to extreme measures to prevent the truth about effective natural treatments (competitive threats) from reaching the public.
The FDA is now, thanks to PDUFA, primarily funded by the drug companies and is complicit in this process. They restrict competition in the guise of protecting the public, when the reality is they are protecting the profits of the drug companies.

My Top 12 Cancer Prevention Strategies

There is so much you can do to lower your risk for cancer. But please don't wait until you get the diagnosis—you have to take preventative steps NOW. It's much easier to prevent cancer than to treat it, once it takes hold. I believe you can virtually eliminate your risk of cancer and chronic disease, and radically improve your chances of recovering from cancer if you currently have it, by following these relatively simple strategies.
  1. Food Preparation: Eat at least one-third of your food raw. Avoid frying or charbroiling; boil, poach or steam your foods instead. Consider adding cancer-fighting whole foods, herbs, spices and supplements to your diet, such as broccoli, curcumin and resveratrol. To learn more about how these anti-angiogenetic foods fight cancer, please see our previous article: "Dramatically Effective New Natural Way to Starve Cancer and Obesity."
  2. Carbohydrates and Sugar: Reduce or eliminate processed foods, sugar/fructose and grain-based foods from your diet. This applies to whole unprocessed organic grains as well, as they tend to rapidly break down and drive up your insulin level. The evidence is quite clear that if you want to avoid cancer, or you currently have cancer, you absolutely MUST avoid all forms of sugar, especially fructose, which feeds cancer cells and promotes their growth. Make sure your total fructose intake is around 25 grams daily, including fruit.
  3. Protein and Fat: Consider reducing your protein levels to one gram per kilogram of lean body weight. It would be unusual for most adults to need more than 100 grams of protein and most likely close to half of that amount. Replace excess protein with high-quality fats, such as organic eggs from pastured hens, high-quality meats, avocados, and coconut oil.
  4. GMOs: Avoid genetically engineered foods as they are typically treated with herbicides such as Roundup (glyphosate), and likely to be carcinogenic. A French research team that has extensively studied Roundup concluded it's toxic to human cells, and likely carcinogenic to humans. Choose fresh, organic, preferably locally grown foods.
  5. Animal-Based Omega-3 fats: Normalize your ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fats by taking a high-quality krill oil and reducing your intake of processed vegetable oils.
  6. Natural Probiotics: Optimizing your gut flora will reduce inflammation and strengthen your immune response. Researchers have found a microbe-dependent mechanism through which some cancers mount an inflammatory response that fuels their development and growth. They suggest that inhibiting inflammatory cytokines might slow cancer progression and improve the response to chemotherapy.
  7. Adding naturally fermented food to your daily diet is an easy way to prevent cancer or speed recovery. You can always add a high-quality probiotic supplement as well, but naturally fermented foods are the best.
  8. Exercise: Exercise lowers insulin levels, which creates a low sugar environment that discourages the growth and spread of cancer cells. In a three-month study, exercise was found to alter immune cells into a more potent disease-fighting form in cancer survivors who had just completed chemotherapy.
  9. Researchers and cancer organizations increasingly recommend making regular exercise a priority in order to reduce your risk of cancer, and help improve cancer outcomes. Research has also found evidence suggesting exercise can help trigger apoptosis (programmed cell death) in cancer cells. Ideally, your exercise program should include balance, strength, flexibility, high intensity interval training (HIIT). For help getting started, refer to my Peak Fitness Program.
  10. Vitamin D: There is scientific evidence you can decrease your risk of cancer by more than half simply by optimizing your vitamin D levels with appropriate sun exposure. Your serum level should hold steady at 50-70 ng/ml, but if you are being treated for cancer, it should be closer to 80-90 ng/ml for optimal benefit.
  11. If you take oral vitamin D and have cancer, it would be very prudent to monitor your vitamin D blood levels regularly, as well as supplementing your vitamin K2, as K2 deficiency is actually what produces the symptoms of vitamin D toxicity. To learn more, please see my previous article: "What You Need to Know About Vitamin K2, D and Calcium".
  12. Sleep: Make sure you are getting enough restorative sleep. Poor sleep can interfere with your melatonin production, which is associated with an increased risk of insulin resistance and weight gain, both of which contribute to cancer's virility.
  13. Exposure to Toxins: Reduce your exposure to environmental toxins like pesticides, herbicides, household chemical cleaners, synthetic air fresheners and toxic cosmetics.
  14. Exposure to Radiation: Limit your exposure and protect yourself from radiation produced by cell phones, towers, base stations, and Wi-Fi stations, as well as minimizing your exposure from radiation-based medical scans, including dental x-rays, CT scans, and mammograms.
  15. Stress Management: Stress from all causes is a major contributor to disease. Even the CDC states that 85 percent of disease is driven by emotional factors. It is likely that stress and unresolved emotional issues may be more important than the physical ones, so make sure this is addressed. My favorite tool for resolving emotional challenges is Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT).

What to Do If You Already Have Cancer

Without a doubt the most powerful essential strategy I know of to treat cancer is to starve the cells by depriving them of their food source. Unlike your body cells, which can burn carbs or fat for fuel, cancer cells have lost that metabolic flexibility. Dr. Otto Warburg was actually given a Nobel Prize over 75 years ago for figuring this out but virtually no oncologist actually uses this information.
You can review my recent interview with Dr. D'Agostino below for more details but integrating a ketogenic diet with hyperbaric oxygen therapy which is deadly to cancer cells debilitated by starving them of their fuel source would be the strategy I would recommend to my family if they were diagnosed with cancer.

Science Sheds Light Why Heating Your Food With Microwave Radiation Might Be A Bad Idea

Reposted from Collective-Evolution

http://www.collective-evolution.com/2016/01/20/science-sheds-light-why-heating-your-food-with-microwave-radiation-might-be-a-bad-idea/

A few decades from now, will it be common knowledge that using microwave radiation to heat food is harmful to human health? It’s certainly a possibility, and information is already emerging which shows cause for concern. Microwaves work by causing water molecules to resonate at very high frequencies, converting them into steam and thereby heating your food. While this might be a convenient way to prepare your food, using microwave radiation in this way actually changes the chemical structure of that food.
The fact that they are approved as safe doesn’t mean much these days, as we’ve seen with several other examples from Tobacco, PCBs and Asbestos and Glyphosate. Just because a government agency, like the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), or a government health agency approves something as safe, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s safe.
You might be wondering how this is any different from heating your food on the stove or steaming it, and that’s a fair question. The difference is that microwaves deform and distort the molecules in food, while conventional heating methods do not.
This is problematic in the medical field as well. We know, for example, that during blood transfusions, microwaves are often used to heat the blood before it is transferred to the patient. But using microwave radiation to this actually damages components found in blood. In fact, one woman even died after receiving a blood transfusion of microwaved blood. (source)
It is starting to look like microwaving can completely rid your food of most essential nutrients, but more research on this phenomenon needs to be done. That being said, there are some publications we can refer to if you’d like to find out more information regarding the harmful effects of microwaves on nutrients.
One example comes from 2003. A study published in The Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture examined what microwaves do to broccoli, finding that broccoli, after being microwaved, lost up to 97 percent of its beneficial antioxidants. By comparison, when researchers steamed broccoli, they discovered that it only lost 11 percent or fewer of its antioxidants. (source)
A study out of Australia showed that microwaves cause a greater level of “protein unfolding” than conventional heating. It found that “microwaves cause a significantly higher degree of unfolding  then conventional thermal stress for protein solutions heating to the same maximum temperature.” (source)
A study using garlic found that just 60 seconds in a microwave can render its principle active ingredient (alliinase) as useless. Microwaves have also been found to destroy immune-boosting agents that are found in breast milk. These are disease fighting nutrients which are essential to the health and development of the child. For example, one study found that microwaving breast milk caused a decrease in lysozyme activity and antibodies, and aided the growth of more pathogenic bacteria. (source) The interesting thing about this study is that the researchers found that more damage was done to the milk from microwaving compared to any other method of heating.
“Microwaving appears to be contraindicated at high-temperatures, and questions regarding its safety even exist at low temperatures.” (source)
A Japanese study found that only 6 minutes of microwave heating turned approximately 40 percent of the B12 found in milk dead and completely void of any nutritional value. (source)
Three recent studies of historical food composition have shown up to 40 percent declines in some of the minerals commonly found in fresh produce, and another one found the same thing for their protein source. (source)
A Scandinavian study conducted in 1999 also found that cooking asparagus in the microwave results in a reduction in vitamins. (Kidmose U and Kaack K. Acta. Agriculturae Scandinavica B1999:49(2).110-117.)

What Type of Container Are You Using To Microwave Your Food?

Not heating your food in plastic containers should be a no brainer at this point. This is precisely why the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends that any plastic containers should be labelled for microwave use, but even if they are labeled as safe, it’s still probably not a good idea. For more more information on what happens when you microwave your food in plastic containers, you can check out this article.
Many studies have shown that multiple plastic products contain various hormone disrupting chemicals, and heat is the worst culprit when it comes to increasing the rate of chemical transfer from the container to your food.
As written in the journal Toxicology Letters:
Using a sensitive and quantitative competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, BPA was found to migrate from polycarbonate water bottle at rates ranging from 0.20 ng/h to 0.79/h. . . . At room temperature the migration of BPA was independent of whether or not the bottle had been perviously used. Exposure to boiling water increased the rate of BPA migration by up to 55-fold.
Again, heat increases chemical leaching, so be cautious of what you use to heat your food. Even plastic containers which are labelled as microwave safe (or even BPA free, which does not account for other worrisome chemicals) are still dangerous.  According to the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), “what the term ‘microwave-safe’ basically means is that any chemicals leaching from the container into food do so at levels far below those shown to have any health effects.  There is cause to be wary of this claim, however. In particular, #7 polycarbonate plastic should not be used in a microwave, even if it is labeled ‘microwave-safe,’ because it leaches hormone-disrupting bisphenol A (BPA), especially when heated.” (source)
This may be frightening to consider, but examining the products we choose to use on a daily basis is important. We have seen many examples in recent human history of information coming to light about a product or drug which completely changes our understanding and attitude towards it. We only have to look at cigarettes to see the proof of that.

Strongest Natural Antibiotic for Every Bladder Infection

Reposted from Health & Love Page

http://www.healthandlovepage.com/bladder-infection-natural-antibiotic/

(HealthAndLovePage) Urinary tract or bladder infection can be persistent and very painful. People who suffer from this infection have a need to urinate constantly and they feel burning pain while doing it. Anyway, there are some natural remedies that can benefit the bladder inflammation.
Bladder infections are more common in women instead of children and men. This infection of the bladder is caused by the Escherichia Coli bacteria. Sometimes bladder infection passes by itself, but if you urinate constantly on almost every 15 min and you feel burning pain while urinating, than you have symptoms of cystitis and you should visit your doctor.

Do you want to treat the bladder infection naturally?

We have a suggestion and solution for that. Here is the most famous natural remedy which helps you to get rid of this urinary tract infection immediately.

Natural Antibiotic Recipe

Ingredients:
  • ½ pound (250 gr) root of well-washed parsley.
  • 1 cup (2 dl) olive oil.
  • ½ pound (250 gr) organic honey.
  • ½ pound (250 gr) rind of homegrown lemon without pesticides.
Preparation method:
Put pieces of chopped parsley root along with the lemon peel, olive oil and honey in a blender. Blend the ingredients all together well and keep the mixture you get in refrigerator.

How to consume it?
Every morning, take one tablespoon of the mixture you prepared. When there will be no leftovers of the mixture – there will be no bacteria anymore.

Other Ways That Can Benefit The Urinary Tract and Bladder Infection

Lots of water. One of the most significant things to do for your bladder is to drink lots of water. This is not a special remedy but it really helps get rid of the bacteria in the bladder. Try to drink at least eight glasses of water each day. Drink even more if you can.

Do your physiological need regularly. Let the urine get out of your body do not retain it. If you keep the urine inside, the bacteria will grow faster. The more often you go to the bathroom the less number of bacteria you will have in bladder.

Make a tea from parsley for yourself. Parsley tea can improve the healing process of bladder infection. You can drink this tea to prevent the infection too. For preparation of the tea you will need 1 cup (250 ml) of water and 2 teaspoons dry parsley. In boiled water, put the parsley and leave it to cool down.

Add cucumber in your diet. If some vegetable is the most important cleanser of the bladder, that is cucumber. It contains lots of fluids that will help you win the bacteria. You can also taste this Sassy Water Recipe, the master key of the flat belly diet.

Make a cranberry juice or tea. The cranberry juice is good for treating bladder and urinary tract infections. You just need 2 glasses of cranberry juice or tea (unsweetened) a day.

In order to destroy the bacteria, drink garlic tea. Garlic tea has anti-bacterial properties. Rind a few garlic cloves and put them in a hot water smashed. Leave them for 5 min and then you can drink the tea. See also this great Garlic Drink – a simple miracle cure.

Drink baking soda liquid to fight against stinging sensation. Put quarter of a teaspoon baking soda in a ½ cup (125 ml) of water and before you drink this mixture, drink two glasses of pure water. Prepare this for yourself every time you feel signs of stinging.

Extra Advice

Stay away from the ingredients that can help the bacteria to quickly attack the bladder and urinary tract like chocolate, citrus fruits and caffeine.

How I Healed My Failing Liver Naturally

Reposted from Collective-Evolution.com

http://www.collective-evolution.com/2015/04/14/how-i-healed-my-failing-liver-naturally/

This past February, I was thrown off of my health high-horse. What first started as a headache, fever, and body aches, quickly escalated into an excruciating migraine, debilitating muscle stiffness, and an overwhelming sense of nausea. I was hit with what I thought was a nasty case of the seasonal flu, and it sucked. But I powered through, drinking my liquids and following the natural recommended flu-protocol, knowing that it would all be over within a few days.

My prognosis proved wrong, however. Over a week into my sickness I still couldn’t eat, and I was dropping weight like a Jenny Craig story gone right. The only word I could use to describe the feeling in my stomach was “gross.” My usually clear skin had broken out, and my urine and stool were also starting to look “off” to say the least, which caused some serious concern.

Then on day 10, I looked in the mirror and noticed something even more unsettling – I was yellow. My skin was lifeless and my eye-whites had become saturated by yellow stains and red veins. I knew it was jaundice, a symptom commonly associated with an out-of-whack liver, which is never a good sign. But I was curious about the cause, so I gathered the energy to head to the walk-in clinic to see what was up.

After my tests, the clinic told me that they’d only call or email if there was an issue. A day later, I received the email, with bold capitals, “You have Mononucleosis (AKA kissing disease), and your liver enzyme levels are EXTREMELY ABNORMAL. Please come to the clinic immediately!“
“Mono!? How would that have even been possible?” I wondered, “I’ve been with the same person for 8 years!” I rarely have even just one drink; super-foods and exercise are an everyday staple for me, so how was my liver so out-of-whack?

Well as it turns out, the mono had conveniently decided to wage war against my liver, and I was losing drastically.

The doctor explained that normal liver enzyme levels range anywhere from 5-50 units per liter of serum, while someone who is ill may have 100 u/liter. My enzyme levels were over 1000. She told me that my liver was basically failing and that I would need further testing done at a hospital.
I was shocked. Never did I think I would be dealing with a failing liver at the pinnacle of my mid-20’s health. A large portion of my writing work is based around diet and health. I offer health advice to the community regularly. Confused I was indeed.

But there I was. Sitting in the emergency room, face mask and all, sticking out like the contagion reservoir I was. There were a few curious stares coming from fellow patients, but most were so wrapped up in their own excruciating physical traumas and ailments, such as a burst appendix and kidney stones, to care about anything other than their name being called by a nurse.

I overheard some of them talking, the ones who had bonded while they’d been waiting. Some had been there over 8 hours, patiently awaiting results and word from the doctor about ultrasounds or blood tests. Things were moving slow, and people weren’t happy about it.

Staring at the faces of the busy nurses, med-school residents, doctors, and various other medical staff, one thing was blatantly apparent – no one looked happy. There was a density that filled the room and hallway – sick people, miserable staff. No available water, and the closest thing I saw for food was a vending machine stocked with pure junk.

I was in shock. There was nothing I could see about the environment that was conducive to healing, and it soon became apparent that everything I had feared and known was true – the state of modern medicine is in shambles.

Here was my dilemma – do I sit and wait for another 3 hours to hear my limited options (of which there weren’t many in my case), i.e., a liver transplant? Or do I say “screw it” to the conventional medical system and take my health into my own hands, like I tell so many others to do in my writing?
Then, in a moment of divine synchronicity, I got the message. While I pondered my decision, scrolling aimlessly through my Facebook newsfeed, a meme with a frightenly relevant message appeared. “The power to heal is within you.”

That was all I needed. I threw my face mask in the garbage and marched out of the hospital faster than I could say “SEE-YA!”

I told myself it was time to practice what I preach and trust that I had the power to heal my failing liver with the right nutrients.

My Liver-Saving Protocol

Although I felt strong in my decision, going against convention is never easy. Fears of the worst-case scenario would come and go, and I was still very sick, and yellow. At times I wondered, “Am I really just letting myself die slowly?” or “Is this lemon juice and oregano oil really powerful enough to heal me?”
Well, long story short, yes they are powerful enough. And here is exactly what I did.

Clean Water

Drinking lots (at least 4 liters) of water is a no-brainer in any kind of body flush. I used filtered water which always had one or two freshly squeezed lemons in it. The alkaline environment created by consuming clean lemon water would prevent any acid-loving organisms from thriving.

Oil of Oregano

Next was to try to kill off the mono virus that was wreaking havoc on my body. I began taking about 15 drops of oil of oregano (combined with garlic) every day. Oil of oregano is a powerful (and nasty tasting) adversary for any sort of bacterial, fungal, or viral infection. Opt only for oregano oil made from Origanum vulgare and Thymus capitatus, a variety that grows in Spain.

Fresh Squeezed Juices

I became a regular visitor at a nearby raw-food cafe, called Live Organic, where I purchased a variety of different cold-pressed juices. One of my favorites was a concoction of beets, carrots, lemon, ginger, and cayenne, appropriately called liver lover.

Beets and Carrots are rich in glutathione, a protein that helps detoxify the liver. Both are extremely high in plant-flavonoids and beta-carotene. Eating beets and carrots can help stimulate and improve overall liver function. (Source)

The green juices I chose were low in sugar and contained pounds upon pounds of fresh, green vegetable nutrients. Kale, chard, romaine, celery, and spirulina were most commonly used.
Furthermore, I drank freshly squeezed grapefruit juice like it was going out of style, another great source of glutathione. I found lemon, grapefruit, and orange made a delicious combination.

Pure Cranberry Juice Cocktail

I also created an organic cranberry juice cocktail that combined pure organic cranberry juice, ginger powder, and fresh squeezed lemon and orange.
This cocktail is loaded with vitamin C, a nutrient that works to thin and decongest bile, allowing the liver to more readily digest fats, as well a glutathione, chelation, and antioxidants.

Spices and Herbal Supplements for the Liver

I purchased an all-natural herbal drink called “Liver Flush” by Omega Alpha. Its main ingredients included milk thistle, dandelion, burdock root, and wormwood shoot.
Over the past forty years, intensive chemical, pharmacological, and clinical research has confirmed the mechanisms of action and therapeutic value of milk thistle in a wide range of human liver-related and non-liver-related conditions. Silymarin is the active ingredient in milk thistle that supports liver detoxification.
Double blind studies on the effect of milk thistle on toxic liver damage (mostly alcohol-related), chronic liver disease, and disease caused by certain drugs have been reviewed by medical experts. The experts all concluded that milk thistle is an extremely therapeutically useful medicinal plant product that stabilizes the cell membrane and stimulates protein synthesis while accelerating the process of regeneration in damaged liver tissue. These effects are important in the therapeutic efficacy of milk thistle.
Organically sourced herbs are powerful antioxidants which neutralize liver-damaging free radicals.

A Reinforced Perspective On Our Current Health Paradigm

Gaining back my health through natural interventions was a very empowering experience. We've been led to believe the power lies outside of ourselves, but it's time we dissolve this belief system.
Gaining back my health through natural interventions was a very empowering experience. We’ve been led to believe the power lies outside of ourselves, and it is due time that we dissolve this belief system.
After a one month bout of mono and a liver that had almost failed me, I came out of my experience with a new, or perhaps “reinforced,” perspective on our current health paradigm. I absolutely have a greater compassion for the chronically ill. To think that so many spend their days bed-ridden, drug-induced, and helplessly passed down by the medical system is extremely disheartening.

The current system is killing us slowly, divorcing us from our innate power to heal ourselves, and it is up to each of us to regain this ability and to loosen our dependence on the advice of conventionally-trained physicians.

Thanks to the incredible amount of readily available information online, we are amidst a new era of health-empowerment, in which the old adage “you are what you eat” couldn’t be more relevant.

She Gave Her Husband 2 Tablespoon of Coconut Oil a Day For a Month. You Won`t Believe What Happened!

Reposted from Health and Love Page

http://www.healthandlovepage.com/2-tablespoon-of-coconut-oil-a-day/

An increasing number of Americans are suffering from diabetes type 2, cardiovascular diseases and obesity daily. As per scientists, there is a very high chance that by 2050, there will be 15 million people in the U.S. who will be suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.
Mary T. Newport (M.D.) is one of the leading neonatal practitioners in the field who has been studying Alzheimer’s related scientific literature for over the past decade. She has discovered during her study that coconut oil has medium chain triglycerides (MCT) that could be a great remedy in the prevention and inhibition of Alzheimer’s disease development.

Dr. Newport’s husband Steve is 58 and has been a patient of progressive Dementia for more than 5 years. According to his MRI report, this disease has a very high chance of developing into Alzheimer’s disease.
Steve has been facing significant memory issues such as being unable to find get water from the refrigerator or finding a spoon. Besides, he has also been suffering from depression. Mary has discovered in her study of Alzheimer’s literature that depression usually comes before Alzheimer’s disease.

Importance of MCT

Whenever there is insufficient glucose, our body cells will use ketone bodies in the form of fuel. Our brain cells are highly selective cells, as they are limited as to the fuel they could use for remaining alive. Usually, they will be using glucose. However, sometimes they could use ketone bodies. The fact is that our body doesn’t have these ketone bodies to be made mislabel for our brain.

What is Alzheimer’s Disease?

The nerve cells in certain body parts are unable to use glucose in the form of fuel. This takes place because of insulin resistance and due to this the nerve cells begin to die gradually. This could continue for 10-20 years before the symptoms of this disease start showing.
But if these neurons can use ketone bodies in the form of fuel, they could survive and keep working normally. It is the same issue in the case of patients suffering from conditions like Parkinson’s disease, ALS, Huntington’s disease and multiple sclerosis. The difference between these diseases is that this same issue occurs in different areas in our brain and spinal cord.
MCT oil and various fat types are not metabolized in the same manner. In our liver, they get directly converted into ketone bodies before being used in the form of energy. When you apply MCT oil intravenously, it could cause hyperketonemia – increase in the number of ketone bodies in our blood. It will be used by our brain cells if there’s glucose deficiency.
According to Dr. Newport, hyperketonemia causes significant boost in our cerebral blood flow (39%). She says that it also seems to reduce cognitive dysfunction linked with systematic hypoglycemia in health humans.
During her study, the doctor found that coconut oil contains around 60% medium chain fatty acids. She also found that it has no cholesterols but lots of omega-6 fatty acids. Even human breast milk and palm kernel oil have MCT. Cow/goat milk also have it in smaller amounts, and also the butter made using these milks.

2 Tablespoon of Coconut Oil a Day – The Therapy

When her husband’s disease had reached advanced stage, Dr. Newport decided to use the coconut oil therapy. She used 100% virgin coconut oil. She began giving it to him daily – 36 g, which comes to a little more than 2 Tablespoon of Coconut Oil a Day. This dose was given for 30 days and she was amazed by the results of this therapy.
She says that she noticed a clear improvement even after 2 weeks and the next major improvement after 37 days. When he began taking this oil, he was asked to draw a clock, and she was left amazed by the improvement and results.
Mary’s husband has shown significant progress, and he has almost entirely recovered after taking 36 g of coconut oil daily for 1-1/2 month.
